Booking Manager Francine tells us what is The Canvas Cafe all about and what it takes to be the ‘renaissance lady’ on the Canvas team!
What’s the best idea you’ve had on your bike?
Moving to London!
Tell us about what your social enterprise does?
The Canvas Cafe and Creative Venue is a blank canvas to launch ideas, started by my good friend Ruth Rogers. It all started with a couch she brought to the Edinburgh Fringe for her positive body image charity Body Gossip. Inviting people to write thoughts about their bodies onto the white couch inspired many moments – my favourite being when a lady wrote she was pregnant! She told the couch before she told her best friend next to her! This began a long journey that has resulted in the walls of The Canvas filled with the thoughts, ideas and expressions of people from around the world. It truly is a place to reflect, laugh, communicate and enjoy a delicious coffee 😉
Why do you do this?
At the Canvas, we take being a social enterprise and non-profit very seriously. From our pay-it forward board to our free community events, all profits go directly to wages and back into the business so we can create a well-being space that is accessible to as many people as possible. Creating a home for happiness is what we do, and we do it because we think there is a big need in our world for caring, compassion and space for ideas to grow, both within ourselves as individuals and together as a species.
How long has this project been running for?
Since October 2014!
What bit of advice would you give to your younger self?
Remember you are not alone. Starting your own business can feel like marrying yourself to an ideal – if it fails, you fail and conversely it can be hard when the thing you love gets bigger than you. But finding how you function within you project, and who and what you surround yourself with to achieve that goal, is key in my experience.
