Designer Shawn Drayton shares with us the motivation behind Osloh, recounting the journey that lead to creating jeans that are comfortable to wear and cycle in.
What’s the best idea you’ve had on your bike?
I started Osloh because I was living in Brooklyn and I rode my bike to work everyday and I was wearing through my jeans, and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. I said “there has to be a better way” and I just decided to make a pair of jeans that I wanted to wear.
Tell us about what your business does?
Anytime you try and start something new, it’s difficult, so initially when we brought Osloh to market there weren’t a lot of garments that were specific to bicycling. Garments that didn’t look like racing apparel, that weren’t performance based. Initially, getting people’s minds wrapped around the fact that there was an actual market for getting a garment that is bicycle specific but not necessarily athletic in nature, was a little bit of a difficult sell.
Why do you do this?
Our jeans are different from a typical 5 pocket or other people’s jeans in that we reinforce key stress areas. On a larger fit we have an ankle snap so that you can release it when you get off your bike. The great thing about our jeans is the variety of fits and they are almost like a blank canvas so individual customers can tailor them and give them their own characteristics so that they match their personality.
How long has this business been running for?
What bit of advice would you give to your younger self?
It’s been a long journey of developing a product that is very difficult to build, but that is also one of the things that is satisfying and makes it an achievement. That’s why they last so long and wear so well, why the fabric looks so good. If we had taken shortcuts and tried to do it the easy, way it wouldn’t be the product that you see today. My advice would be to stay focused on quality and not to compromise too much on your original idea.
What’s the best way people can connect with you?
