The Story of Isambard’s Cycles

What’s your name?

Isambard’s Cycles, run by us, Sarah and Tim.

What’s the best idea you’ve had on your bike?

To get a new bike! I’d thought I was relatively ambivalent about cycling, but then I had a go on a good bike (nothing special, just a quality older steel frame, well set up) and everything changed…

We cycle in to work together from Walthamstow, so it’s a really good opportunity to brainstorm!

More recently was the realisation that the business needed more space in order to grow. We’re in the process of building a new shop which is due to open around the corner on October the first. It’s four or five times the size, and will allow us, our bikes and our customers some much needed breathing-room. We’ll have a coffee machine and beer fridge in there too – come along and say hi!

Tell us about what your business does?

The main focus of the business is on custom builds – we like selling people the bike of their dreams, rather than a rough approximation of it.

We use older steel road bike frames on the whole – anything from the 30s to the 90s – because they are unrivalled in their ability to combine versatility, durability and looks.

We also undertake restorations and renovations of customers’ bikes – whether it’s just a matter of a few drops of oil and tightening a cable, or a full rebuild with new paint and replacement period-correct parts.

Why do you do this?

Wanting to work for ourselves, wanting to work together and wanting to work with bikes (after realising that living without them was an entirely avoidable impoverishment). Very simple really!

Having been in our existing shop for a few years now though, having a new space to work in in the very near future is also enormously exciting. Especially in the summer, our current premises can feel very crowded and close, and it’s physical size is the limiting factor in the business developing further, so the prospect of being able to think and grow much more freely is getting us up even earlier and working even later.

How long has your business been running for?

The shop has been up and running for 3 and a half years. It all began when Tim started building bikes out of his bedroom to fund his Masters degree.

What bit of advice would you give to your younger self?

Don’t wory too much about sometimes feeling you’re not going in the right direction – inevitably this will change at some point. And be brave…when an opportunity comes along, dive in!

Check out the new shop!

Sarah & Tim open their new shop on Saturday 1st October – why not pop along and check it out!
