As a regular user of London’s bicycle hire scheme, Sandy was frustrated with the poor quality of the luggage rack available. Together with Katie, they went on to design a bag that would be the perfect fit for bicycle hire schemes. This is the story of Bikeshare Bags.
What’s the best idea you’ve had on your bike?
The one that led to the founding of Bikeshare Bags…a shopping/cargo bag specially designed to fit onto the bikes used by the Santander cycle scheme
Tell us about what your business does?
Sandy uses the ‘Boris Bike’ for commuting and generally getting around London, and was struck by the poor design of the luggage rack. It is too small, and uses over-engineered shock-cords to keep your stuff in place, which tends to crush the cargo.
Katie worked on the design of a smart tote bag that allows riders to keep all of their stuff security stowed without being crushed. It can be used for commuting, shopping, running errands, or just as a general ‘lugging stuff around’ bag.
Why do you do this?
Making life better. Why put up with poor design when there is a better way. And also, it would be cool to see people cycling around London with our bags on and think ‘we did that….!’
How long has this business been running for?
What bit of advice would you give to your younger self?
Make a plan, because life is not a dress rehearsal.
